Cloud computing emerges as one of the hottest topic in the field of Information Technology. It is a new paradigm for delivery of applications, platforms or computing resources to customers in a "pay-as-you-go-model" like any other services in a real life situation. It is attractive to business owners as it eliminates the requirement for users to plan ahead for provisioning. Because of this feature, enterprises and business owners prefer to go for cloud environment instead of investing on their own infrastructure. However, though cloud computing offers huge opportunities to the IT industry, the development of cloud computing technology is currently at its infancy, with many issues and challenges still to be addressed. One of the distinguishing characteristics of cloud computing is the ability to scale computing resources to match customers' demand. In this paper, a survey of cloud computing is presented, highlighting some of its issues and challenges and important concepts of scalability. The aim of this paper is to provide a better understanding of the immediate concerns that need to be taken care for a better scalable cloud environment. Keywords

Cloud computing is a new era in the internet. All types of services are provided by the cloud computing. Cloud is designed so as to provide software, application and infrastructure as a service. There are some issues in performance while providing these services. Among classified, scalability is one of the major concerns that needs more attention for better performance of the cloud computing. Scalability is differentiated as horizontal and vertical. In this survey paper, vertical scalability is analyzed with the various scenarios and the concepts of vertical scalability are discussed. The possibilities to implement the vertical scalability are analyzed. The benefits of implementing scalability in various levels and the issues related to the implementation of vertical scalability in cloud systems are also discussed. Finally, the strength and the weaknesses of vertical scalability are analyzed and results are given in table. Keywords

Cloud Computing system provides common online business applications as service that are accessed from a web browser, while the software and data are stored in servers. The service is accessible from anywhere in a network infrastructure without the geographical limitations. Cloud environments provide services to the larger audience through high scalability. Hence scalability is one of the major concerns of cloud computing. In Cloud Computing, the scalability is broadly classified into two types, namely horizontal scalability and vertical scalability. Horizontal scalability relates with the addition of more machines or devices to handle the increased demand of the cloud computing platform and Vertical Scalability is the power of the system that entails the addition of more resources to the same computing system. This paper deals with the various methodologies used for horizontal scaling. It points out various research challenges of horizontal scalability in cloud computing environmentComputing system provides common online business applications as service that are accessed from a web browser, while the software and data are stored in servers.
